This little place was a real-life Eldorado not so long ago. Altough only marginally larger than Rush's Mine, it had more that ten times its mass since it was basically one big ball of iron, tungsten, platinum, titanium, zirconium, iridium, gold, uranium, chrome, copper, silver, and the list goes on. Its name originates from a famous pirate, Edwin Strauss, who in 2602, while trying to escape its faith by a daring maneouver near Liaququ 2's surface, only managed to merge with it at an estimated 170 km/sec. The spectral analysis of the crash fireball performed by the pursuers revealed the planet's richness in metals, hence its name.
Being so rich in valuable metals, it was the colonist's first and main source of income. However, such a treasure wouldn't go unnoticed and on 2633, the Empire occupied the Liaququ system, mainly to aquire this source of raw metals (see History). By the 2700s, in less than 100 years, the Empire managed to almost completely deplete Liaququ 2 of its valuable metals. When the costs of operating the mines exceeded their output, the Empire withdrew from Liaququ. Several centuries had to pass, before the mining operations could be resumed, this time by the newly formed Liaququ government. Advances in mining technology, such as mantle tapping, allowed Liauququ's fledgeling industry to have an in-system source of raw materials, and a high degree independence from outside suppliers (70% of all raw materials consumed by the industry, comes from Strauss's wreck, a figure which hasn't changed in the last 200 years).
Some 22,500 people live in and around New Schneider, the planet's only starport and habitation. No less that 95,000 km of mining galleries and 12,400 km of mantle pits are working place to these people, or, more exactly, to the mining robots controlled by them. Automatisation is high, some mines and mantle pits being completely autonomous.
An orbital trading post, an old Coriolis Station, comissioned in 2999 also services the planet and is home to an additional 5000. Its name is Heath Terminal, named after Heather Longfellow, the first Liaququan president.
Those who wish to buy various valuable and precious metals and minerals are strongly advised to do it here. Besides that, there is little other reason to dock here, as the "No sights to be seen" warning is aplicable to this boulder also.
