The Liaququ system history spans over 700 years and we can distinguish
4 periods:
Colonisation
& Terraforming - 2600 to 2630
First Independence
- 2626 to 2633
Liaququ
under Imperial Colonial Rule
- 2633 to 3000
Second Independence
- 3000 to present day
Colonisation & Terraforming
- Liaququ's central star was known to prehyperspace Earth astronomers
as Gamma Pavonis (see System Map
> Gamma Pavonis), and
its three gas giants were detected by astronomers as early as 2005 by
indirect methods (star wobble) and 2011 (direct imaging). However, there
was nothing special about the star, and due to the presence of a dust
disk (see System Map) the system
was believed devoid of life-supporting planets so exploring the system
in the hyperspace era presented little interest to anyone. It was a
frontier system in those days and besides, humanity had more important
things to attend to, like the first Empire - Federation interstellar
war. In 2552 however, a man known as Elijah Haskerling - a small-time
pirate, sometimes bounty-hunter and always smuggler decided it was worth
taking a look. Our Elijah was an amateur astronomer and his ship was
equipped with a powerful telescope, so he was able to make out three
rocky inner worlds, a couple of sattelites around two of the gas giants
and, surprise!, a life-supporting planet, Liaququ 3. A practical man,
Elijah decided to sell the information he gained. To whom exactly, we
don't know. His name is lost to history. All that we know is that in
2597, the Summa Corporation CEO, Bo Kur, gained this knowledge. Bo Kur
was an old man and desperately wanted to be remembered for all eternity,
and this presented him the perfect oportunity to realise his dream.
During 2598 he sold all Summa Corporation stocks to various others and
purchased a small fleet of cargo ships equipped for colonisation &
terraforming duties. He managed to convince some 6000 brave souls to
join him and also he hired a large armed escort to protect the convoy
from pirates, common in the sector. On 29th of December 2599, his fleet
made the first jump enroute to Liaququ, from Barnard's Star to Epsilon
Eridani. Arriving in Liaququ system on 4th of May 2600, he quickly discovered
that altough Liaququ 3 did sustain life, it was only marginally inhabitable
by humans. Huge amounts of money and almost 30 years (see System
Map > New California)
were required before Liaququ 3 would become a place for humans to thrive.
Bo Kur died in 2627, before terraforming was completed, but he managed
to fulfill his dream: Liaququ was recognised by both the Federation
and the Empire as an Independent System in 2626, on 16 February.
First Independence
- From the acknowledgement of the young state in 2626, an almost anarchic
regime engulfed Liaququ: the now 50,000 strong Republic had a constitution
to draft, a President to elect, an infrastructure to set-up, a military
and police to draft and train and the basic needs of its citizens to
take care of. Fortunately (not quite), rich metal deposits were found
on Liaququ 2 (see System Map
> Strauss's Wreck),
so at least Liaququ had something to trade for food and basic commodities,
and a raw materials source for its developing heavy industry. The only
problem was that Strauss's
Wreck was just TOO rich in metals, and the Empire also had a developing
industry in search of raw materials sources. And here was Liaququ, 6
light-years from its borders, no military, no military assistance treaties
with the Federation, or with anyone for that matter, no military at
all to be more clear. "Just reach for it and pick it when it's
ripe" that's what the officers at the Imperial Navy HQ in Facece
must have tought in the spring of 2633. And Liaququ was as ripe as an
apple in August. On the morning of June 4th 2633, an Imperial battlegroup,
500 ships strong, escorting a landing force of nearly 100,000 Imperial
Marines, hyperspaced in Liaququ System, near Godzilla. And the rest
is, as they say, history.
Liaququ under Imperial Colonial Rule
- The Liaququ military was more of a police force than an army and was
no match for the crack Imperial Marines. In less that two weeks Liaququ
was "pacified": all resistance crushed, a 30,000 strong garrison
(22nd Mecanised Legion) was set up, and Liaququ was formally declared
Imperial territory.
Under this quality, the citisens of Liaququ would endure hundreds
of years of hardships and injustice. To begin with, Liaququ was under
Imperial Colonial Rule: this meant
that the population was not represented before the Emperor, in the House
of Parliament on Achernar, that the system was ruled by a Governor with
executive and legislative powers, personally selected by the Emperor,
that Martial Law was in vigor, that the natives were forbidden to leave
the system without a special approval from the governor, and that they
could be thrown into slavery for as little as not obeying the curfew.
Since Liaququ was a young and small system-state, little support from
outside was received against this agression. The Federation issued a
formal protest, as did a few other independents, but that's about all
that they did. However, using weapons smuggled by daring commanders
a Resistance movement began to make its presence felt. They hit the
Imperials where it hurt them most sabotaging the deep mines on Strauss's
Wreck. And altough the retaliatory raids were extremely brutal, the
Resistance kept on making life hard for the occupants. Nonetheless,
by 2750's Strauss's Wreck
was almost mined out. The mines were rapidly becoming unproductive and
by 2763 Imperial mining operations in Liaququ officially ceased. The
Empire then quickly lost interest in this system as it had little else
to offer and it had at best a mildly important strategical position.
However, in those days giving up on a system was a very politically
incorrect thing to do in the Empire and as such the occupation continued.
However, since the system's economical output towards the Empire
was now at negligible levels, serius cutbacks in the size and funding
of the Imperial military presence on Liaququ were effected. This, coupled
with an increase in the density of pirates and smugglers in the system,
meant that the Resistance movement was growing stronger. By the 2900's
there were less that 5,000 Imperial Marines stationed on Liaququ and
well over 50,000 active members of the Resistance. It all culminated
on 12th of April 2990 when 900 Imperial Marines relocating to a forward
base were ambushed and massacred. It became obvious to the Empire that
it had to step up in-system military presence, if any form of control
was to be retained. Only now, the Empire had no desire in pouring defence
funds in a world which only exported bad news and Marine corpses. Talks
with the leaders of the Resistance were initiated in 2991 and by 2995,
Imperial presence in Liaququ was formal at best. And on 1st of January
3000, 1,500,000 Liaququans cheered as the Empire officially relinquished
control of the system to the newly formed Liaququan government.
Second Independence
- Liaququ had gained its long sought independence, but it helped them
little: there was no industrial infrastructure except for mining, there
was no agricultural infrastructure except to feed the miners and there
was no transport infrastructure except to move the ore around. However
there was hope: new technologies had been developed to mine the liquid
core of a planet that offered the possibility of continued mining operations
on Strauss's Wreck. Also,
since 2805, a small contingent of Sirius Corporation workers had been
refining military fuel on Rush's
Mine, under an 50-50 agreement with the Empire. For exclusive production
rights for the next 199 years, Sirius Corporation agreed to financially
help the Liaququ government set up an economically viable infrastructure.
The Liaququans were also determined not to be conquered again - this
required a competent military to be created, in this case competent
= money. Slowly, though, under an unusual long period of efficient management
under competent leaderships, Liaququ began to flourish. And now, its
new military had the opportunity to prove its worth as the newly found
prosperity once again attracted the interests of the Empire and prompted
two major invasion attempts - one in 3170, the other in 3205 - and countless
other probing attacks from the Imperial Navy. So far it seems that the
Liaququ Defence Force can stand its ground against its bigger cousin,
the Imperial Navy.
Tourism and agriculture also became major players in Liaququ's
post-Imperial economy. Tourism especially has boomed, party based on
the beauty of New California. A modern shipbuilding industry, an efficient
mining industry that provides 70% of the necessary raw materials and
a small but active milfuel refining industry (inherited when the Sirius
Corporation ended its 199 year lease agreement with the Liaququ government)
also add to the prosperity of the system. In short, the immediate future
looks bright for the Liaququans.
